Anyone have experience doing DIY bathroom, or really in electrical and/or plumbing job, remodeling requiring a permit? I'm interested in knowing what the inspection process. What are the inspectors like when dealing with homeowners? I keep thinking it's like a pop quiz on site.
Also, any info about obtaining permits for electrical and plumbing? I read that you have to take an assessment but can't find any info about that online.

If you are the homeowner you can act as the general contractor and get a building permit however, you will be required to list licensed sub contractors for the skilled trades, plumber-elect-HVAC.

I'd suggest joining a DIY forum which has active and retired contractors, and different levels of DIY'ers. DIYchatroom.com is one of them. Very helpful.

There are books on codes, practical standards, best practices, design, etc. Depending on how extensive the work is, you might be able to just casually do it yourself or with a little help. A permit would give you an extra set of eyes and keep it official. It's up to you. It's also a matter to speed and quality of the end product. A good contractor can get you there faster and keep you relatively safe. Just don't skimp on materials and cut any important corners.

Many tasks do not require any special certification. Working on an AC compressor does, I believe. For most things, if you happen to get it wrong, you will just have to re-do it. If you kill yourself by accident, well, at least you tried!

I do drywall, painting, and minor electrical and plumbing myself. My father ran his own gas lines and finished the attic. The gas lines had to be inspected for safety and before the utility company would supply gas.
