The reason Google jumped the gun and labled I-785 as I-840 is because the northern part of the loop is still under construction and once it’s complete, it will be signed as I-840. I-785 will eventually be extended north along US-29 from the loop to Danville. Here’s the project page if you’re interested:

Ok, got it. I have driven through the area many times in the last few months and I have taken 785 once or twice. But I always took it back to I85 an then stayed on I85 all the way to GA.

We should hit Greensboro around 7AM. I have been through the area at about that time before and it was not terrible. I will probably take the US29 to I40 route this time and see how it goes.

Does anybody know (probably LM117 ) when that section of I-85 around Kannapolis will be finished?

Is it a year from now (end of 2019) or will be done in early 2020?

I was up there in March during March Madness checking out the progress and it was coming along, obviously the southern end will be finished before the northern end.

All I know is, once that section is done, I-85 from Hillsborough down to Charlotte is going to be amazing, with 3 and 4 lanes the whole way.

Whoever had the idea to go from 2 lanes directly to 4 lanes and skip 3 lanes, I applaud you!

And with NCDOT planning to widen the southern most 10 miles of I-85 and SCDOT currently widening their northern most section of I-85, maybe in ten years or so, I-85 will be a minimum of 3 lanes from Durham all the way to Anderson, SC (mile marker 19).

Summer of 2020 is the currently projected completion date.

I drove through this area over the weekend and took US29 to I40 west, to US321 to I85 in Gastonia. I was amazed that I40 had WAY less trucks that I85. It was a much more pleasant route than driving straight down I85.

321 between Gastonia & Hickory is normally a very pleasant drive. I frequently recommend it & get told that I'm nuts, on this board. Thank you for the feedback.

I'm reviving this thread because I need to drive through NC to GA in August. Has any I-85 construction been completed yet? Is that Greensboro urban loop (off of US29) completed yet?

If not much has changed since my post in October 2018, I will probably opt to take US29 to I40 west, to US321 to I85 in Gastonia.

Just pull up google maps before you go. If there's any bad construction backups, you'll see it. Just as much a chance as there being a random accident the other way.

That doesn’t work if you leave several hours before getting to the area.

It's mostly done and 4 lanes each way through Kannapolis up to Exit 63. I think that's all opened up since October. The five mile stretch from there to China Grove is still under construction and tends to back up southbound coming from Salisbury going from 4 lanes to 2 and with US 29 closed at Exit 68. Of course a wreck or bad weather changes everything, but it wasn't bad when I went through at the end of June. I wouldn't go waaaay out of my way to avoid it. It looks like it should all be done within another year.
