There are also some very nice neighborhoods in Gastonia, where they are building, & there are some neighborhoods where gentrification is occurring. So that's why I asked what your point was. You made a one size fits all statement. It's not accurate for the whole city of Gastonia.

I think Gastonia is like many other similarly sized cities - you have good areas and you have not so good areas...sometimes just streets apart. Charlotte itself is the same way...I was looking at new homes off S Kings Dr and they were $700k+ despite there being many not so great houses scattered about and obviously a large spectrum of people passing by (homeless people walking down the road).

When I see statements condemning the entire city of Gastonia I can't help but think that the person isn't familiar with the city, but is commenting based on local newscasts where they can never seem to find a decent place to stand to do their stand ups. I can't help but assume an ignorance of the town. Had that person been to the Schiele, he or she would be hard pressed to make that statement.

Another group I often hear it from is some locals that have a circle of friends you’d probably describe as “riff-raft”. Yeah, maybe Gastonia as a whole seems pretty bad if the people you surround yourself with are are drunks/criminals/pill poppers, etc.

I posted about this in the grocery thread, but it seems appropriate here.
When the Gastonia Lidl opened last year, I went on a Sunday. I got into a conversation with a woman from Cornelius. She told me that she worked for Harris Teeter & she was told to go to a Lidl & shop. She said that she was afraid to go to Gastonia, but it was much closer than the other 3 stores. Then she said that her observation was that Gastonia was nothing like what she thought that it would be & she intended to return until a store opened closer to her.
Everybody loves to have a scapegoat. The TV stations have made Gastonia Charlotte's scapegoat.

Ha - afraid to go to Gastonia. I’ve been all over the Charlotte area through the years and most of it didn’t seem much different than Gastonia to me...to the point where Gastonia could just be considered another area of Charlotte.

I have zero problems with Gastonia. It reminds me of many, many MidAtlantic towns, both larger & smaller. I've never been afraid of them. You just have to use your head.
I really have a problem with the way that the TV stations portray Gastonia. Many times certain reporters seem to look for a place to do their stand ups that will look as bad as possible. Some do that to Kings Mountain, too. The reporter from WSOC however, usually goes to a location downtown.
I'm 53 and was raised in Gastonia. Lived in Orlando FL, Columbus OH, and Cape Cod MA for short stints and Concord NC for 13 years. Came back to Gastonia and couldn't be happier. Love the town. Have never, EVER had a crime issue. As with any town, crime is in certain pockets of town and most victims/perpetrators know one another. If one uses common sense, for the most part, they will be fine in any city. Gastonia has some of the best people you'll find anywhere, great housing prices, Crowders Mountain State Park, parks/greeways, Schiele Museum, one of the easiest commutes into Charlotte, some incredible mom n pop restaurants, and very close to Lake Wylie, Stowe Botanical Garden, and U.S. National Whitewater Center. We plan to never leave. I've always heard the lies and stereotypes. What can you do? I guess they're easier to believe than actually finding out for yourself.

Like what? I am not from the area but have been eyeing Gastonia for quite some time. I have a $250K budget and I think my quality of life in Gastonia would be a lot better, provided the entirety of the city doesn't have major issues. I hear mixed reviews of this area so it's hard to make a decision as to whether or not it's a good deal.
