We will soon be relocating to the states from Switzerland and have set our sites on either Atlanta or Charlotte. We need to be close to an international airport, but the thing that bothers us most about Atlanta is the horrible traffic. Now I hear that delays are common in Charlotte-Douglas. We have one daughter who is 15, and want to find a good school for her with a diverse student body. Can anyone offer advice to help us make this decision any easier?

Well, the Charlotte area is about half the size of Atlanta (but we are growing a lot). Atlanta also has a much larger foreign population and more diversity and culture. Atlanta might have horrible traffic, but atleast the roads are wide and in good shape. Here they are in bad shape and way too small! Basically you need to ask yourself - do you like living in a larger city or a mid-sized city? They are both nice places to live. If you live in Charlotte, you might like living in-town in an established neighborhood/close to downtown.
Charlotte has a lot of traffic too. There are less people, but I don't think that the roads are as equiped for the large traffic congestion yet. How much international travel would you do? I would check the flight patterns for the airlines you think you'd mostly use. If you're in Charlotte, then you might occassionally have to connect in Atlanta.
I've lived in both places and I love both. I was in Atlanta when I was right out of college and single. I still picture Atlanta as a haven for young single life. I can't see myself there with kids. Charlotte is much more laid back and I think people here have a stronger sense of community.

If I were moving here from Switzerland, I would want to be in S. Charlotte, where I would be less than 20 mins. from the airport, and could get on 485 and easily make my way to the charming mountain town of Blowing Rock for great escapes. I would also know my daughter would be in a great school district . . . and my family would have easy access to all the conveniences we would want to access, from groceries to healthcare to upscale retail shopping.
I would chose huntersville to be close to the lake - it is a straight shot down i-77 to the airport - Anyschool will be much more diverse than your schools in Switzerland if you are talking about different ethnicities. You can't go wrong. Good luck
