Everyone is driving like they have to get somewhere ASAP and the "southern-charm" that we are supposedly famous for is only a facade to improve customer service.

With Asheville, you have more than enough parks and outdoor recreational activities to take part in. There are loads of options with bars and restaurants, and the best part is that you don't have to drive everywhere to get to them. It makes for a cleaner city. Having said that, there is a bit of a homeless problem there but I've never had an issue with them that directly affected me.

I have a friend who moved there from Florida and works at brewery, absolutely no complaints from her even with the cold weather.
No offense, but you typify the average 21 year old pothead that hangs in central Asheville. That may even have been a compliment. First, what is your meaning of culture? Asheville was nothing but a mill town 50 years ago. If you could go back to that day, you would be saying that Asheville had "no" culture as your would likely have not approved of the people there that were mostly referred to as "hillbillies." On the other hand, Charleston was a thriving city over 300 years ago. Charleston had the first synagogue and playhouse in the colonies. It was one of the largest cities in the colonies and the first shot of the civil war shot there. It was the home of many statemen of the past, i.e. John C. Calhoun several others. It launched the first submersible battle ship in history during the civil war. It is the home to the famous Citadel University and houses may antebellum homes and historic spots like where Blackbeard the pirate was hanged. To say that Asheville's culture is "on par" with Charleston's is laughable. It would be like comparing Paris with Wilmington, Delaware.

Charlotte is a much newer city than Charleston. It played a key role in the Revolutionary War with the defeat of the British in battles, It gained the name "Hornets Nest" from the description of the locals that were tough fighters and stung like hornets. It was the home to the Confederate navy during the Civil War. Later, Charlotte manufactured T-Model fords. During WWI, most infantry soldiers were trained at Camp Green on Wilkinson Blvd. As a reminder, Camp Green Street and Remount Roads still remain. Model T Fords were manufactured in Charlotte and during WWII Niki missiles on Statesville Blvd. The northern part of the city and country was the settlement area for hoards of Scots/Irish settlers in the mid to later 1700s that were known as Ulster Scots. They came after the wars with England and today host Scottish festivals.
Mecklenburg County developed its Declaration of Independence in 1775, a year before the national official one. Despite not being available, its existence was well documented and validated. Charlotte was the home to the first American gold rush in 1799 and as a result was the only ment of gold coins for many decades.

Lastly, Charlotte may not have the fame of New Orleans, San Francisco or even Charleston in regards to fine cuisine, but the restaurant scene is top notch. With a metro population of just under 3 million, all countries are represented in varieties offered. You may have to go to a particular neighborhood for a particular dish, but that is normally the case in cities our size. I don't know how many bars you require, but in my community, there are more than I will ever use and that is the case about everywhere.

I think before people make general unresearched comments, the should realize that they give themselves little to no credit in regards to being an experienced contributor. I am not 100 percent hooked on any particular area, but I believe that credit should be given where deserved. I also believe that one can enjoy most things in life in most cities if they are only positive. In reality, you might say that the Charlotte is so diverse and has a large enough population to have several mini cultures and not a prevailing one.

Yes, the new ‘deflection’ to minimize the possibility of racial retribution.

I love Charlotte, as the area has been good to me overall, as well as the State of North Carolina. What I’m stating is the area is no panacea, especially considering the exploding crime rate.

**************************************

One week after the Rock Hill ‘massacre’, there was another ’situation’ on the NE side of Richland County outside of Columbia. Another ‘fine young man’ went into a nice, gated community (predominately white) to practice his best ‘Diamond Dick’ impression on any female he caught outside of their homes - this routine had been going on for several days with no police response. ‘Diamond Dick’ was the nickname of the nemesis Dick Rowland who apparently triggered the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots.

Long story short, 1st Sgt Jonathan Pentland went out side to check on the commotion, confronted ‘Deandre' trespassing into Mr. Pentland’s yard, slapped ‘Deandre’s phone out of his hand, resulting in Mr. Pentland being arrested for 3rd degree assault. Richland County Sheriff Lott defended ‘Deandre’ stating the ‘fine young man' was having a 'mental episode’ despite his lengthy record and having skipped a court session that very morning, resulting in a pending arrest warrant.

While Mr. Pentland was bonding out of jail, a substantial crowd had gathered outside of Mr. Pentland’s home for several hours (none lived in the gated community), demonstrating against Mr. Pentland and his family, including vandalizing the home - police didn’t bother to come out until the remaining family members requested an escort away from the house. It is not known what has happened to Mr. Pentland and his family since that fateful date. Sheriff Lott literally threw the Pentland family under the bus while siding with an unlawful mob.

*************************************

Everyone locally should recall he Cannon Hinnant case from a year ago in eastern North Carolina. 5yo white child was executed point blank (gun to his head) by the 25yo black neighbor with a lengthy criminal record. Mr. Sessoms was suffering from a ‘mental episode’ and was was portrayed as an ‘equal victim’. Took close to a week before the story appeared in the Charlotte media, despite appearing almost instantaneously in the Daily Mail of the UK.

*************************************

My point: This is the ’new reality’ of living in the SE US. Expect daily crime whether its in your upscale gated community, at an upscale shopping center, your kids’ schools, or anywhere you think may be safe. The judicial system will likely throw you under the bus, and if you complain you will be called a bunch of ‘bad names’ and run out of town.

*************************************

Love your extended family and especially your children - be ever vigilant, where ever you choose to live. We are now living in a weird age where what was lawful is now criminal. What was criminal is now lawful. The social justice warrior battle cry is “Equal Outcomes for All!"

I'm sorry for your loss and the trauma you have faced. Losing loved ones to homicide is awful.

Well the following I mean with complete sincerity and offense, but you are without a doubt confusing culture with history. While culture does include history, history itself is not the whole of culture in general. What I'm talking about is architecture, art, music, food, urban design (which is a sign of how much a city cares about its inhabitants), the creative happenings in the brewery scene, it's nature preservation, and lastly it's people. I find the people in Asheville to be much more friendly and obvious much less high-browed compared to those in Charleston. While Charleston does have many of the things I just referenced, it clearly is more historically significant. Though again, history does not equal culture, it just enhances it.

Charlotte on the other hand has the things that differs between Charleston and Asheville (snobbishness and history), but without anything truly positive, see my list in the third sentence of first paragraph. At the very least what little culture is present (e.g, Black culture) is also being suppressed thanks to the lack of media spotlight it gets as well as heavy gentrification in Black neighborhoods.

What I find laughable is that you would make John C. Calhoun as the luminary figure of Charleston. This guy not only defended slavery, he aimed to expand it West. There are certainly other figures that Charlestonians would be proud about and he ain't in that group my friend.
