Hey, I will be graduating with my masters in social work in May and relocating to Charlotte. What is the pay range for a new graduate and will I be able to support myself?
The average salary for a social worker with less than one year of experience in Charlotte is $47,500. The career, in general, is not super high paying as the average peaks around $61,000 for social workers with 10+ years of experience.
You would be able to support yourself assuming you have realistic expectations on the lifestyle you will be able to afford, are ok not driving fancy cars, buying expensive clothes, eating out all the time, and traveling extensively, et... You should be able to afford a modest apartment and support yourself though.
Pay varies widely depending on years of experience and licensure level, where you live, and what kind of social worker you are.
Get your LMSW and you will make more and have more opportunity. Zip recruiter has LMSW average at 65k. Healthcare social work jobs tend to pay more such as in hospitals. You will need the license though. From social worker to social worker I would get it as quickly as possible. But in short you can make good money and support yourself.
I think that Zip average is based on federal job salaries. I'm an old LCSW with decades of experience. When I moved back to NC, any mental health job paid everyone an entry level salary. OP, look on USAjobs as well as Indeed. Good luck. You'll need to be licensed by the NC board for many positions.
