My wife and are considering a relocation from the Chicago suburbs to the Charlotte area. We have 2 young kids and are looking for a nice town with really good schools. Would love to hear from people who have relocated to the Charlotte area from Greater Chicago, or even NY / New Jersey on whether or not they are happy with Charlotte and what to expect. We certainly expect this to be a big adjustment and want to make the right choice.
There are nice suburban towns around the metro, but knowing your housing budget, wants, and if you need to commute to a work location would be helpful as congestion / limited public transit options is a factor to weigh. I ask budget due to prices varying greatly. Marvin is a great town for example with excellent public schools, but there are no SFH for less than $700,000 right now.
We transplanted from Southern California and are very happy here.
@mbt989, we are moving from the Chicago area (Wheaton/Glen Ellyn) to CLT this summer. 3 young kids and our house hunt is in full swing. We are focusing on Union County (specifically Porter Ridge, Weddington and Cuthbertson feeder schools). If you're like us and looking for a nice main street to rival many Chicago suburbs, they are harder to find- but we really enjoy Matthews and Waxhaw. There are plenty of other options besides Union County that other posters can weigh in on. In SC, Fort Mill schools are very solid, it's got a nice little downtown and the Anne Springs Close nature area is very cool.
Good luck, hope you make the jump and join us!
