Anyone know the real story? I've heard 80,000 per yr. but where are these statistics coming from?

According to the Census Bureau 66,724 people moved to the Charlotte metro area last year...

Here are the census population estimates for Mecklenburg County:

July 1, 2007 867,067
July 1, 2006 835,328
July 1, 2005 802,400
July 1, 2004 775,538

July 1, 2000 700,794
Census (April 1, 2000) 695,454

That comes to an increase of about 166,273 or 24% since 2000 or about 23,853 a year.

Here are the extimates for Charlotte. This reflects annexations as well as natural growth.
