He could always do odd jobs around the neighborhood, like mowing lawns, washing cars. Sometimes the government will have programs for young teenagers looking for jobs for the summer also.
Sheenie, which one did you call? I called the one in Steele Creek and they said 16.
You know, maybe they decide on a store by store basis? It could all be up to the individual store owner whether to go with 14 or 15, or even 16 (many people don't want to work with young teens). I know last summer at the Arboretum location it was 15.
Yea it seems to go store by store. I personally think 14 might be kinda young for a fast food place? But I think it's more of a personal preference, I am biased to my first job at the library! :P
Chick-fil-a's have individual owners, so it is store by store. They have base company rules, but others it's up to the owner. At 14 they are very limited in the hours and jobs they can do, same with 15. Personally, I am not sure what the rush is... too much pressure on kids these days anyway without having a "comitted" job, I did the snow shoveling, dog watching thing.
The summer before I turned 13 I started my own lawn care business. $20 a yard was a steal for the people I was mowing for, but I still pocketed like $500 after paying my dad back for the mower & fuel. Plus it was the only time in my life I had somewhat of a tan.
I just drove the mower down the roads in my sub development and put out flyers in the mailboxes.
Taught me a few things:
1. Regulate finances. I had 'bills' I had to pay for fuel and the mower.
2. Beginnings of starting a business.
3. How much I miss working outdoors instead of a cube in an office.
I didn't know the kids could work at 14, but I think it's great!
I will continue to encourage the kids to do odd jobs around the neighborhood as the timing is often more flexible, they don't need a ride and I expect they can earn a lot more than they could at a fast food joint or working retail. As it is now they can get about $5/hour for easy work, $10 or more for labor intensive work. They get $5 a day for pet sitting that only takes 15-20 minutes a day. With 3 or 4 regular jobs they do just fine during the school year. Of course they can increase in the summer...they just have to drum up the business.
Is minimum wage the standard wage for teens? When I was a teen in PA we had a 'student wage' which was considerably lower than the minimum.
