Not necessarily a company, but a type of alarm. You want something with cellular backup that is battery powered. That way if the power is cut and the alarm goes off, a distress call is made to the monitoring company. The backup unit is typically installed in the atic, so that it isn't accessible from outside the house.

Criminals don't respect county borders. In the South Charlotte/Union area, thieves are hitting unlocked cars and homes right now -- hard -- because they know people don't think they are targets down here.

The trend is the 'upscale' areas being effected.

Be prepared and be aware.

I have elected to go with cell backup.
Shortly after other family in town have done the same.

Crime is in both counties. Union County is not immune. There seems to be more crime in the suburbs than anywhere else in the Charlotte area. Don't let your guard down anywhere...it is 2008!

There were two incidents recently that come to mind -- the guy at Providence Country Club (wasn't it?) where he saw the thieves in his home while he was on the golf course. And wasn't there an armed robbery there too? Then the home invasion/robber in Ballantyne.

I do think they are targeting the "upscale" areas. Ours is not an expensive neighborhood but is one that it considered nice and safe. We're getting hit pretty hard with theft.

Get a large, LOUD (read: vicious) dog. Our dog tried to bite the leg off of a solicitor the other day....he'll never come back again. Dogs react immediately, security systems don't, JMO.
We had a security system installed, for those few weeks every year, that we are away, otherwise our dog does the job.

I don't want to give too much away because my book is at the publishers but home defense boils down to what we call the 4 Ds

Deter
Delay/Deny
Detect
Defend

Alarms are both deterrents and detectors so yes get one...your home owners insurance will probably give you a discount as well. As one poster already said, I'd also get a dog as they're 24 hour a day furry burglar alarms.

You also want an alarm that's monitored..the ones that just go off don't do anything except annoy the neighbors during the compulsory false alarms.

It was Longview that had the golf course fight during the attempted break in and it was Providence Country Club that had the attempted abduction.
