Can anyone explain to me the official relationship between the City of Charlotte and "Center City Partners?" I hear about this group all the time as if they are some quasi-governmental agency. It really seems like they run the show around here. There website however doesn't explain the position of power they are in, or what they are actually organized as, legally.

I hear all these stories about them and sort have started to think of them as this group of rich businessmen that get to call the shots around here.

They explain what they are on their website (see below). They’re a downtown association, much like you find in every city, and even some small towns (such as Downtown Davidson, Inc.). Think of them as a “chamber of commerce” of sorts for just the central business district.

Website: Charlotte Center City Partners

Background
Business leaders, Center City residents and city government formed the Uptown Development Corporation in 1979. The name changed to Charlotte Center City Partners in 1997. Our purpose is to facilitate and promote the economic and cultural development of the urban core.

In July 2004, Historic South End merged with Charlotte Center City Partners. Historic SouthEnd now has a budding Neighborhood Association and an active Public Safety Council.

The organization is funded primarily by a municipal service district levy assessed to property owners in the Center City.

The staff consists of 14 full time employees. Our board of directors is made up of representatives from Center City and Historic South End businesses, Center City residents, the Greater Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, City and County government and hospitality, arts, cultural and educational entities.

What are you referring to? What "shots" have they called?

On a side note, I sure hear a lot of griping about the Center City Partners... but as an uptown worker let me tell you, they ROCK!

They are a great group, with a good leadership and vision who have brought a lot of economic vitality to this town.

I'm sure Moira Quinn (the face of CCP) wouldn't be too happy that you perceive her as a rich businessman! She got her start on local TV. I remember her from a show called PM Magazine in the early to mid 80's.

So they have absolutely no official roll in the governmental process? I get the feeling that they hold a lot of sway with official city government and that they are essentially financed by the major financial interests in this town. Sort of a way to subvert democratic process. An efficient way. One that fosters economic growth. But a subversion none the less.

eh, maybe so.

Judging from the content of your other posts, seems like you have a bone to pick w/ downtown.

i've got an idea for ya'... move. Or stay away from uptown. Either way, you shouldn't spend so much time being upset and worrying. It isn't good for you.

I get what he/she is asking. They do have there hands in a good bit of development downtown. I think this stems from the fact that they have some players theat have been around for a while doing there thing. I think they just created a group to make sure everyone is heading the same way etc. No harm no foul.

Actually, I think the OP has probably been listening to too much Jeff Katz. I mean, think about it. Their job is to promote Uptown. Why wouldn’t they have their hand in what’s going on there? And if you read the link I posted, they proudly note "their" accomplishments.

True. I just happen to know some of the people involved and don't think there is anything nefarious going on . . . so that is why I wondered what the big deal is.

But I get what you are saying, CB. And yes, they do "toot their horn" w/ their accomplishments, Hee Hee, even tho it took a lot more than just their group to reach those goals.
