Hello, I'm around the Northlake mall area of Charlotte. I moved here about a month ago and I'm wondering what places are good to go to just to walk around and enjoy nature and get a lil exercise.

I saw on the map that Mountain Island Lake and Latta Plantaiton are close, but I have not had a chance to go there yet.

Any suggestions? I also heard that there are some good places around for fourwheeling (I don't have one now...but maybe in the future).

Though this isn't the place for four-wheeling ( ), have you been to Freedom Park yet?

Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC (http://charmeck.org/Departments/Park+and+Rec/Parks/Parks+By+District/Central+District+III/Freedom+.htm - broken link)

This is my favorite place to walk my dog.

Just a short drive down W.T. Harris Blvd. from your location is Reedy Creek Park. This is my favorite in the Charlotte area. Its a very big park with something for everyone. The front section has some ball fields and pavilions for BBQing. Further back, there are 2 or 3 ponds for fishing, a frisbee golf course and tons of walking trails through the woods. I've spent alot of time there and have found some trails that are relatively unused. It should only take you 10 minutes to get there from Northlake (barring traffic).

OH you got to go to Latta Preserve!
There is nature and paved trails, horseback riding, canoe or kayaking, segway tours, ample picnic grills, fishing, volleyball court lake view piers and benches and it on same road as Latta Plantation and Carolina Raptor Center.

Thanks. That gives me some good places to go to this weekend hopefully (as long as the weather is decent). The raptor center would probably be neat too.

There is something called as BoardWalk (just opposite to Dicks/Sams/Best Buy) in the university area... From northlake mall, drive towards North Tryon and in the lights before the North Tryon (JW CLAY BLVD), take a left turn. Take the first right and go straight to reach board walk... enjoy

I was going to suggest his place also. It is very nice, I think the paddle boats are still there. Normally in the summer months (Sunday's), they have have band that plays outside. You can walk all the way around the pond (which has a fountain). You might catch a wedding at the Hilton on Saturdays.
