Looking for a used car for my 19 yo son and have passed the Carmax store on Rt 74 a number of times in the past. Need to get some opinions from people who have bought there, THANKS.
I'm indifferent about CarMax. They seem to be a good operation.
I like to do research and then negotiate to get a mutually good deal on cars. CarMax doesn't work that way, so I find their prices above what I can usually achieve.
As a seller I brought my mint low mileage car there recently. They offered me practically nothing. So instead I just listed it on craigslist.org for at least less than $2,000 that I know they would have relisted it for b/c of their overhead/profit. Bear in mind that regardless of how good/bad Carmax may be, if you go directly to an owner you should be able to get a much better deal. I knew that to compete with Carmax I'd have to have a very competitive price, & even with that, I'll still come out better than selling it to Carmax & the buyer will also save a ton of money.

I have walked there lot several times, and I like the way they do business but I never bought because I find them to be too pricey, but my sister bought at Carmax in Florida and she's been very happy.
We never actually purchased a car from them, but I did test drive several and had good experiences with everyone I dealt with. We went to the one on South Blvd. in Pineville. Good Luck.
I sold my deceased mom's car there. Got a more than fair price, not any problems. Went like clockwork. I was totally impressed. Again, I was a seller not a buyer, but it was, from my perspective, an incredibly smooth and professional operation.
As a seller, you'll get more from Carmax then your average dealership. When I was thinking of seller my Murano a year ago, they offered me $2k more than other dealerships.
However, I feel as a buyer, that if you want piece of mind then buy from them. Yes, it will cost you more but you know you didn't get a POS
I say take the time to negotiate these days. Dealerships are desperate and if you have time/energy to go through the trouble you will get a lot more for you money. Basically depends on your priorites. Good luck!
(1) I bought a 2003 Acura from them and paid market value but the car was in exceptional condition.
(2) I traded that same care about 2 years later and received $2000 more than any other dealer would offer me.
(3) Purchased a 2007 Acura from them, had it shipped from Florida for $150 and they sent me about 50 pictures before I made the decision to pay them to ship it. I had already worked out a deal with Hendrick Acura for the same car. The Carmax deal saved me $6K off the price of the car, and they gave me $2K more for my trade in.
My mother purchased her last care from them as well. She took her SUV back for a free oil change they gave her about 3 months later and they said her tires were worn too bad and it shouldn't have been sold to her like that. They replaced them for FREE and fixed her brakes.
Most people don't know this but you can purchase a car from them and for 5 days drive it with unlimited mileage and return it no questions asked with no penalty to you! 30 day warranties on cars without a manufacturers warranty left as well.
I've had nothing but great experiences with them and saved a lot of money as well. Some cars are worth purchasing from them and some not.
Expensive SUV's like Range Rovers, etc.. are so cheap at Carmax its pretty crazy.
Bought you cars there a while ago. Both were complete lemons and required thousands in work at less than 60K miles. However, they were a Ford Taurus and Thunderbird, so it may have been more to do with the cars than the dealer, lol!
Personally, I would sooner go to a dealer to get a used certified than a CarMax.
