Learners Permit, SS card, ID.... (insurance, school, DMV)

Did you ever have a day when you just can't get there from here?

My daughter was all set to go get her Driver's Learner's Permit, and we were gathering up her documentation. Along the way, we discovered that we have no idea what has happened to her original Social Security card (which we established at her birth). Apparently, this is a deal breaker for getting the learners permit.

Now, I'm accumulating documentation to prove that she ever had a social security card to get a replacement card. She doesn't have a passport or a drivers license. Her student ID only has a photo, no "biographical" data.

I'm trying to come up with an acceptable document (since birth certificates don't prove identify). Has anyone else been down this path? Can you offer a suggestion before I trek all the way over to the Eastland mall SS office?

I had to do this and brought medical insurance bills that had my ssn# on them and my birth certificate. I got it in the mail in about a week.

I am so sorry, MN. All this paperwork sure creates a lot of anxiety, doesn't it!!!

What do you have that shows her SS # on it? Tax returns? As Sophialee said - medical insurance, maybe? If you can find something that ties your identity in w/ hers (i.e. IRS docs) then maybe that would be acceptable.

Sounds like a trip to the SS office, tho. All of this is gonna be time consuming. Soooo sorry.

OK, just for the benefit of those unfortunate souls in my same predicament.

For a replacement SS card for a minor (who has no driver's license, etc.), you only need to prove IDENTITY. A birth certificate does not work to prove IDENTITY. What worked for my daughter was her school photo ID card (it had her name, her photo, and her student ID number). It established that she was who she said she was, and it was traceable to the school. We were told she would get her replacement card in a week to 10 days.

We trekked over to the Social Security office near Eastland Mall. It wasn't as bad as I expected. You check in, take a number, wait your turn (there were about six people ahead of us), provide your ID, then you get a receipt and your card will be mailed to you.

I had to replace my SS card last year and only took in a hospital birth certificate and a few other pieces of paper, they don't seem nearly as restricting as the DMV.

what age do you have to be in NC to get a learners permit? Can AAA help with it?
