Sirens are tested on the second Wednesday of each quarter. Test dates for 2009 are:
  • January 14

  • July 8
  • October 14
Siren tests normally occur around 11:50 a.m. and last approximately three minutes. Remember, in an emergency, sirens would sound repeatedly.

Does this happen in a town name McGuire or do you hear the siren all over Charlotte?

McGuire Nuclear station, on Lake Norman.

I don't know how many miles are covered w/ the audible range of the sirens.

I know all the communities in the LKN region can hear the tests.

I am in S. Charlotte, for example, and cannot hear them.

There is a zone around each plant where the sirens are located. As said above, you can't hear it in Charlotte, but if you are on the south end of the lake, it's a very eerie sound. Hard to miss.

If you live in the zone, Duke sends you a free calendar each year that has the dates marked.

Looks like they run on the same schedule as McGuire...

In brief - July 7, 2009

By Staff Reports

Lake Wylie Pilot

Station to test sirens Wednesday
LAKE WYLIE -- Sirens located around Catawba Nuclear Station will be tested Wednesday, July 8, at approximately 11:50 a.m.
No public action is required during this three-minute test. By testing the sirens, state and county officials and Duke Energy ensure the sirens are operating properly. This full-cycle siren test is performed once each quarter. County emergency officials are responsible for sounding the sirens.

Until about 10 years or so ago, Huntersville used to call the volunteer firefighters to the station when there was a fire by sounding, yes you guessed it, an old air raid siren. It was from the days when the town was much much smaller. Even though it sounded quite different from the McGuire siren, people unfamiliar with this would often confuse it with McGuire.

I had a new neighbor once that heard the fire station siren go off. Thinking this was from McGuire, she threw the kids and dog into the car and took off. After driving for a bit she started to wonder why nobody else was making a mad rush to get away from the nuclear meltdown.
