Another fun idea, especially for a 2 year old is apple picking. Last year we went to an apple orchard outside of Hendersonville and saw spectacular fall colors as well as picked apples. I will try to do a search and find you the name of the actual orchard. It was great though, they had a play area for afterwards, a small store where they made home made apple doughnuts and sold other goods, as well as had huge pumpkins. We brought our 3 and 1 and 1/2 year old and they loved it! We are from upstate NY originally and it reminded me of picking apples near Cortland when I was a kid
It was Sky Top Orchards Welcome to SkyTop Orchard We actually made a whole weekend out of it and stayed near Lake Lure too. We went mid October, of which if you look at the apple picking schedule means a lot of the apple varieties are past prime, but there were a ton of apples to be picked.
Reviving this thread - how are the colors looking for a trip to Blowing Rock this weekend?
In my opinion, the trees are about half changed. Still lots of green, although tonight I noticed it seemed that in the last few days more color has appeared. There IS some color, but it's not peak yet. The following weekend (Oct 17, 18) should be peak.
And I haven't been over to Blowing Rock recently, but I seem to remember from last year that when Blowing Rock didn't have much color, there was more toward Boone, as that's getting closer to the higher mountains of the NC/TN border.
We are thinking about taking a day next week during the week to beat the crowds - won't go unless it's a nice sunny day. Thinking from Huntersville, 77 to 421 to Wilkesboro then 16 to the Blue Ridge Parkway, then take the parkway south to Blowing Rock, then home via 321.
Apple picking idea is great - bought apples in Henderson County at end of September and the guy was telling me they were swamped with them! Had huge production, despite a hail storm and the heavy rains in mid to late September. Bought the best and most gorgeous Cortlandts I have ever experienced. Can't wait to head that way next weekend, have to go to Macon County (Franklin) and look forward to taking 64 so I can the sights along the way.
