Anyone care to provide tips on how to control bugs around the house and in the house. I live in a wooded area and I see a lot of bugs all over the yard, many times in the house, I even saw one cockroach in the kitchen yesterday. I also have a basement foundation if that helps in narrowing different treatments. What are effective treatments?

Exclamation Nuke it from orbit!!

I'd suggest checking all possible bug-entrances into the house. Check that windows and doors seal completely. Pipes under the sink, vents, etc are sealed properly around edges. Keep the house clean--DON'T LEAVE FOOD OR DIRTY CLOTHES LYING AROUND. House plants can harbor critters.

It's inevitable for the occasional bug to get in. They may even hitch a ride in your groceries! But unless you have an infestation, no need to conduct chemical warfare with yourself in the cross-fire. (As for the rare bug in our house, we just smack it and/or vacuum.) Once the summer is over, the insects will disappear.

As for the bugs in the wooded area . . . well, it IS a wooded area!

Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite.

We also live in a wooded area and we do very little to keep out the bugs...but we haven't had any problems with bugs either. I don't consider the occasional bug in the house to be a 'problem', it just comes with the territory. Just this morning DD escorted a little lizard back out to the front porch. The roach you saw may have been a palmetto bug that came in from outside. It may happen from time to time. It seems rather unnatural to me to live in a wooded area and then mess up the balance of nature by eliminating bugs, snakes, critters and such.

We take a minimalist approach...spray the foundation and eaves once per year, usually in the fall when we get lots of spiders on the house. There are spiders outside all the time but they get really bad in the fall. We leave the snakes, birds, bats and dragonflies to eat the bugs and the snakes will eat small rodents too. Once (in the 5 years we've lived here) we had a bunch of little millipede's in the crawlspace and sprayed in there too but that's pretty much it.

If you have a real bug problem then you might have to do something more.

I use Bayer advance pest spray. Works at least 6 months in the house and it's extremely affective.
