I'm trying to decide if I should change careers or not. I have been an IT professional for about 10 years. It's something I really got interested in in college and I used to spend all my free time trying to learn about computer stuff. I had a pretty decent career for the first 7 years but my job situation has been shaky for the last 3 and I actually haven't been in an IT job since Sept '08 when I got fired from my last IT job. I have had to work delivery jobs for 2.5 years as either a second or sometimes primary job because of this. I had been verbally offered another IT job and thought I was going to start real soon but today just got tired of all the BS, lack of communication, and run arounds and told them I didn't want it anymore.
I don't spend any free time anymore trying to learn computers and I'm not excited by them at all. I also think 3 years of bouncing around jobs and not fitting in anywhere is more than enough.
So I think a career change is in order, but I don't know how to go about it. I don't want to spend 4 years going to back to college just to get another degree. I'm pretty sure at least starting in some 2 year program would be a good idea but I have absolutely no idea what else I would want to do. I feel like a freshman in college all over again.
So I'm looking for any other thoughts or advice on what direction to proceed.

The career counseling center at any community college can help you. There are vocational tests that tell you what you like best and suggest careers to match. Go try a center!

Also ask yourself if you want to live to work or work to live. Some people do not care what they do as long as it pays the bills and allows them to enjoy their time outside of work. Also some people value stability more than anything else regarding their job. My sister for instance could not handle working for IBM for no other reason than the constant threat of layoffs. She decided to go back to school for nursing and made d*** sure she did it in a way that she will NEVER have to worry about having a job. That is what makes her happy.
