I believe at the same time this happened, the school board also rasied the issue of shifting some students out of Myers Park HS to East Charlotte for basically the same reasons as to what happened in Mint Hill.
I do not understand how my new home can be walking distance from the Town Hall building but not zoned for MHHS.
Perhaps because Independence High School is closer to the Town Hall of Mint Hill than the so-called Mint Hill High School which is across 485? I agree, the name should be changed. Until Butler was built all of Mint Hill attended Independence and loved it as their neighborhood school. The old zones looked like the worst of gerrymandering - swinging around 51 and sending former Garinger students to Independence. LOOK at the zone map - it does make sense, circle zones instead of zigzagging in and around. Independence will be the Mint Hill neighborhood high school again.

Believe it or not I have LOOKED at the map. I don't run around basing my opinion on things I have not actually looked at. And I see a high school built for Mint Hill kids now being used for mostly non-Mint Hill kids. Neighborhood schools to me mean two things... That the proximity makes sense as well as trying to keep kids together from elementary school through high school. You can't always build the new high school right in the center of the area. Yes MHHS is off to the edge of town BUT it was suppose to be for Mint Hill kids.
Maybe they should just change the name and call it a day.
Right now seems that both sides want to give some nefarious intent to how their school is zoned. If neighborhood schools are what you want, why is there such outrage at going to the school closest to you. Without having to resort to squiggly lines.

The response is based on a few things. First when the bond was proposed and voted on it was presented as a new high school for kids in Mint Hill, obviously people based their votes on that info. Also there is a difficult history in Charlotte regarding school zoning that sets us up for a lot of mistrust. Also my house is actually closest to MHHS by a .5 mile. Not a whole lot but still closer. Secondly when they base decisions on socio/economic factors it smacks of the good old busing system.
