So glad to hear the news. You are a good person to take the dog in and try to find the owner. If you had been quick to get rid of her who knows what would have happened. It's people like you who make this town a great place to live. Thanks for making my day!

All you pet owners should make sure your name and number is on your dog's collar!

Every pet store has the $5 make-a-tag machine these days...

That is true and I do that with all my pets. But you all will love this story. To make it short, about 20 years ago I raised shelties and one of the kids did not close the gate one evening . . . and one of the shelties ran off during a storm (she was afraid of lightning and panicked). Teams of friends/neighbors searched for her for days. She had several tags on . . . her name, our address, our phone number . . . license tags . . . even a tag w/ vet info, contact, etc. For two weeks we put up posters, called every possible place (vet's offices, animal shelter, humane society, etc). Two weeks and one day to the time she was lost, I decided to drive out to the lake - one particular area no one had searched as it was over 3 miles away, and an upscale neighborhood that would have folks in it who would have definitely called us had they found our girl.

And there, walking down the street w/ two women in their 60s was my dog.

Yep. On a brand new leash. Attached to the collar she had always worn . . . w/ all her tags on it.

I jumped out of the car and was LIVID. Asked why they had not called me or driven the dog back to my house, for that matter - contacted me somehow!

And you know what they said? Ohhhh . . . she had tags on with her name? We just never noticed.

Yeah. Right. They just liked my dog. And if I had not happened at that very moment to drive there . . . I guess I never would have gotten her back.

You just never know what some folks are capable of doing - (or not doing).

Many years ago we had an older dog that had a hard time walking. The yard was fenced in. I brought the garbage out one day and apparently didn't close the gate latch all the way. So of course the dog manages to push the gate open and leave. We drove all over, and couldn't find her. She had been my now ex-husband's dog forever and of course I felt like you know what. The next morning we got a call from our vet giving us the address of the people that found her. We didn't realize the tag with our name and phone number was worn out but the rabies tag was good.

She had managed to walk 4 blocks and cross two busy streets. She was resting in front of the house of the people and it was too late to call the vet so they took her in. They were so nice when I went to get her because I was so happy I was crying. I just thanked them over and over and they just said she had a little toast and water.

I just remember blessing them for the longest time after because not everyone would be so kind.

Well, after my really discouraging story, it was truly good to read an uplifting one!

And I am so glad your sweet doggie found a safe spot . . . and good folks who helped her get back home.
