I took this photo 6 years ago from Independence Blvd in December 2003 according to the date on the file. If I remember correctly, it was just before dark. Notice this part of Independence had yet to be turned into a freeway though they were working on it.
This would be what Charlotte looked like just before the banking/real estate building boom which has since collapsed.
I remember when Independence was so tight that you could touch the car next to you! And the Krispy Kreme on Hawthorn Lane.....Good Stuff!
No kidding. I think they took a two lane road and restriped it for 3 lanes.
When I was taking Driver's Ed back in, oh, 1976, the first time I drove on the city streets the instructor had me head uptown on Independence. That was a baptism by fire.... There was a nasty curve just after the Krispy Kreme that you mentioned, driving through that was like being in a NASCAR race.
