Big surprise coming from you. The guy has an opinion of which most is not out of the ordinary, however, his prejudices are transparent. He happens to be a pessimist. He displayed that. Many others are optimists. We hope that Charlotteans will bring the city back up and keep locals like Hugh in charge. What was the author talking about when he says "real cities". Are other cities optical illusions?
Contrary to this guy's thesis, America can and still is building great cities, and this will be the case even if our growth and urban investment cools off a bit in the future. For instance, look at Austin. That city, with its significant high tech sector, survived the shake-up of the dot com bust and is experiencing significant urban investment. Charlotte's story isn't the story of every other up-and-coming city. And even our story isn't the worst possible story there could be--far from it.
I guess my concern is what are we building and producing in Charlotte or any other city in America for that matter? We have sent most of the things that we make and produce elsewhere. What does Charlotte produce that others do not? We are not electing people into office who are creating / making new industries and jobs. I really hope that we aren't going to base our whole economy and hope on this "Green" movement.

sadly, you could replace charlotte with any other city in the country and put that city in your post and it would hold true.
i too hope that we don't base our whole economy on the green movement.
And for all the people that want to say "what do we *make* in Charlotte?". Look at Detroit, in specific, and Michigan, in general -- huge amounts of manufacturing. Working out swell for them right about now, isn't it?
they put all their eggs in one basket, tho...similar to charlotte and banking. diversity is the key, IMHO.
