My wife and I will be taking a trip to Charlotte in the month of June in order to take a look around the city and try to narrow down a couple locations that we can see owning a home. This first trip is to try and get the lay of the land, but I would like to narrow down our search locations so we're not driving around blind. Here's some of our criteria....please let me know if you guys have any opinions on what areas/neighborhoods would fit.

-older homes, early to mid 1900's(not fans of the "master planned community")
-No kids yet, so schools aren't a factor right now
-we are both 34 years old
-we don't want to live in a remote location, would like to be somewhat close to decent restaurants, nice grocery stores etc.
-price $170k-$250k range
-we wouldn't object to purchasing a home that needs a bit of work
-normal size lot, but might want enough room for a pool in the future

Hopefully you can help us narrow the search down as we're going into this first trip blind and we would like to have some direction regarding areas in and around Charlotte that fit our criteria.

Thanks in Advance!

any advice? We'll also consider 60's, 70's homes as well as long as the homes aren't on top of each other.

I thing third of an acre is considered a good-sized yard in Charlotte. Sardis Forest, Sardis Oaks maybe? Really old homes like in Belmont actually sit too close to each other. You might like NoDa, but yard size might be a little too small for some...

Thanks for the response, but NoDa seems like it would be out of my price range. Most homes are $300-400k or more. Where is Sardis Forest located?

Try the Coltswold area. Older homes that are not in subdivisions where you can still get a decent deal on a home that needs a little bit of work. Close to the city, restaurants, etc. But hurry up! People are discovering this gem of an area!

Oh well, times might have gone away when 170 could buy anything descent in Cotswald...Sardis Oaks is between Monroe and Sardis Road that are connected by the road called Sardis North. Lots of trees, shopping and dining galore, close to uptown.
NoDa does have some 200K homes but I don't think they stay on the market for too long...and they are smaller.

Madison Park in South Charlotte is a nice older neighborhood.

great, I'll pay a visit to all these places next month. Are their any nice older neighborhoods in Huntersville or Gastonia? Also, how is Statesville? I seem to find older homes popping up there when I search. All this is great information, so please keep it coming.

I was just going to suggest giving Gastonia a look. The York Chester neighborhood has many older, but very beautiful homes. I'd also look at Salisbury as well.
