I don't mean to offend anyone, but would someone please enlighten me on the known "bad areas" in and around Charlotte? I am looking to rent an apartment and would like to avoid them. We are moving from a town near Newark, NJ, so we have a pretty wide-ranging interpretation of what a "bad" area might be. I just don't like places with drug problems, inner-city problems, noisy environments, gangs, etc. One of the reasons we are moving from here is to get away from all that.

Sorry, this is a double post. I didn't see the forums pertaining to specific cities at first.

You can check crime stats and demographics at charmeck.org. Go to "Neighborhoods", click on 2006 Quality of Life Study and look at the color coded maps.

There are many responses already on this site for the same question. I could tell you what the person told me when I interviewed in Charlotte last week. When renting or buying stay in the South East area, like Ballantyne, South Park, Piple Glen and providence. I doubled check with friends who live in the area and was told by some the thing. I have not checked out Charlotte locations like I did Raleigh. So I'm only going by trusted sources.

Be cautious about west charlotte, I don't know the area number, but there are some crime issues in that area, along with lower performing schools.
We had family in that area and they were forever having their car broken into.

Good Luck with your journey.
Belmont and Mount Holly are nice area's too.

if you watched the local news you might have heard that we rescently had enough of 'bad areas', and we are pretty mad. 2 policemen got murdered in the line of duty, and Charlotte Obsever did a Sunday article on that apartment complex where it happened. There is like 10 similar complexes they said, they get plenty of calls every day. they are the highest crime areas, and Charlotte obsever said that, like %82 of homes are subsidized housing, so every one blames the city for high concentration of criminals...but i beleive they are doing something to change it. Just what, I'm not sure. today's news is the city might subsidize public housing in the 2nd ward, here you go Donald Trumph

Thanks, everyone, this is all great advice. I'm starting to get a good picture of where we should plant our flag.

I think all urban areas have problems. Where we live now, Newark is close by and we have some limited problems with theft from cars, petty crimes, etc. I would still consider where I live now to be an OK area.

One of the things I like about Charlotte is that it is small, so the areas "outside" of the city are still close, and the city is accessible. I work in Manhattan now, which is an island. There are really only 3 entry points from NJ (and the ferry), which makes commuting so much fun...

Thanks, again
