I am a new teacher and I was recently hired by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. I have been browsing on the internet and I came across a nice priced house for rent. It is listed as being in the Barrington neighborhood. Does anyone know of this area and if it is safe for a young single woman living alone?

I would not recommend it for a young single female. Do you know which school you will be teaching at yet? You'd want to get reasonably close to where you work, but with some schools you won't want to get too close. If you give us better idea of what section of town you will be working in maybe we can make some safer suggestions for living

I was hired by West Charlotte High School. From the things I have heard, I do not think that area is advisable for me living alone. I don't mind commuting from another area, as long as it is safe.

Well, bless you for taking on such a tough school assignment - I really mean that! West Charlotte used to be a model school in the black community back in the 60's and 70's. They have been on an downward spiral for over a decade now and really need all the help they can get. But you are right, you don't want to live on that side of town. How much are you looking to spend, and would you take an apartment or do you have to find a house to rent?

Yeah, I've done a lot of research on West Charlotte and I recently completed my student teaching in a school that has similar problems. I really think that schools like West Charlotte really need teachers who care and who are willing to be there for the students. An apartment is fine. I've been in a one bedroom apt. all through my undergrad, but when I move to Charlotte I would like to upgrade to at least a two bedroom. I think that $800-850 would be my limit.

In that price range you will have no problem finding an apartment Houses in that price range however will most likely not be in the best of areas.

I would suggest you investigate apartments in the Huntersville area - the commute wouldn't be too bad and you would be in a nice area with a lot of other newcomers and people your age. I don't live on that side of town so I can't recommend specific apartment complexes, maybe someone else will chime in with some names for you. But for now, try googling apartments in Huntersville, that will give you a good place to start. Best of luck!
