I guess coming from South Florida we don't have too many nuclear power plants hanging around down here. Plus all the lakes we have in Florida are made for recreation and not power. I guess I just am a little naive to how Charlotte functions so I am just another one of those people asking questions about it. I just find it odd to have a beautiful area with a lake and not be able to take part in enjoying it because it was made for power purposes.

Well these lakes are usable....its just Duke Power uses them as well.
I wouldn't be too worried about them though.
While LKN was made primarily for power, if you read the links provided you will see that in addition to energy, the lake has emerged as a premier place for recreation and high-end living. Let me just tell you that as someone who lives at LKN, it is most certainly used for recreation. This was a busy weekend with TONS of boaters!
It's not contaminated, no one glows, and it is a very desireable place to live.
Its not contaminated by the power plants but it is definitely not clean. There is a huge amount of runoff going into the lake not to mention the number of boats that dump their tanks in the water. I put my boat in the water but I do not swim there! The same goes for Wylie.
I don't know any body of water that is "clean" anymore, unfortunately. It's sad how our environment is getting so polluted. Even in the mountains there are issues.

Florida and North Carolina have the same number (5) of operating nuclear power reactors.

Amen. My wife swam in Lake Norman as a kid, but she won't do it now. I guess there are still people who do, and those who water ski in it as well.
I have tied my boat up in rafts and on more then a couple occasions I have seen large boats come buy the group and dump their tanks. The oily residue, tampon holders and toilet paper does not always stay down. I have heard a few conversation with execs in the area where they discussed doing this. I don't understand these people but the exec s use my business from time to time and I have no problem charging an extra fee or two to these clowns and giving it back to enviromentally friendly orgs.
If you see them dumping take pictures and report them.
