Over the last two days there has been at least two sheriffs at SVMS. Is anybody aware why they seem to be patrolling Sun Valley Middle School, is there a threat/problem of some sort, or is there a more logical reason. My daughter just started sixth grade there, and I haven't heard anything regarding this.

Not sure, but this IS the time of year that students have DARE graduations.

I suspect that if something more were going on, you would have gotten one of those automated phone messages giving you an update. We get those regularly. Last one detailed that a student dropped a thermometer and they evacuated the classroom to clean up the mercury spill. Union County is very good about communicating with parents. Make sure they have your correct contact info.

The principal told me a few weeks ago they have them there at the end of school just as a precaution b/c I guess the kids seem to get nutty at the end of the year and it sort of discourages it

Yeah, I was there today and saw a sheriff. I asked the lady in the office and she told me the same thing. She said they go to the high school too. I guess it keeps the kids in line. I wonder if they have had problems in the past. Does any other middle or high school do this in union county?

Weddington has had one in the past. Monroe has had one at some point or still does.

I understand that all the high schools have a sheriff and there's a bill in the legislature to extend this program to middle schools.
