Got a letter from dear old North Carolina Dept of Revenue stating that we never paid the wife's 2009 State taxes. Well, we sent a check on March 29th and it appears it was never cashed. Fair enough, I will re-send it immediately.

The issue I have is the $120 interest they are charging me. I knew we sent the payment in March and I thought they cashed the check when I looked a few weeks later. It turns out the check that cleared was for something else and it was just a coincidence that the amounts were almost identical. Once again, my fault. However, the issue I have is that I kept the certified mail receipt and when I looked on usps.com, it says that it was indeed delivered on March 31st. Do I still need to pay for the interest charges? I mean, they didn't cash the check but they did receive it. It has my wife's and I SS# on it too. I'm not happy that it's floating around out there.

Anybody have any recommendations as to what I can do?

Sending something by certified mail only means you have a receipt confirming that they received an envelope or package. It does not confirm that there was anything inside the envelope or package.

Having crisscrossed checks to our utilities, I speak from experience ... unfortunately.

I would present that to them.....by chance do you have a carbon of the check?

I would dispute the interest payment if you have all those things.

Default Time is money

How much of your time and how much hair do you wish to lose over a $120?? When you decide that answer you will have the answer to your query.

Hmm. Good point. Perhaps I didn't include the check in the envelope. I haven't found it around the house and we did make a copy of it but there is a small chance we never put it in the envelope.

I'll just pay the interest and say that I did my part in closing the budget gap
