Anyone have experience with selling a car yourself in Charlotte?

We've always traded in or given away our old cars, but we have a 2007 low mileage car that we want to sell instead. We don't want to go the Carmax route since they pay wholesale for your car and then turn around and sell it for retail. We'd rather sell it ourselves and get the retail price.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The fastest way these days seems to be Craig's List and the daily paper - run an ad from one Saturday to the next Sunday - you'll get lots of calls.

What kind of car is it?

Smile Craiglist

We sold our car last august thru Craiglist. had alot of calls. saying people wanted to see it, finally ending up selling it. our car was 10 years old. the part that was a pain was getting serious buyers to look at only. and some people say they were going to look at it. and ended up canceling out.

took about 3 weeks to sell it.

good luck

Thumbs up Consignment

Back in 2007, I needed to sell a new-ish low mileage car. I tried all the usual ways first, and then ended up using "Automotive Consignment" on Independence Blvd.

Pros:
-They took care of advertising and test drives.
-They offered financing to buyers, which is important if the selling price is high. (My car sold for $17,000.)
-The selling price was higher than if I sold it on my own. (The difference for me ended up being ~$1,000.)

Cons:
-I left my car at their lot in order to facilitate selling, so I didn't have usage of it.
-There was a fee of approx $400 (but the higher selling price should offset this).

I believe other dealers could sell your car on consignment too, but this one specializes in it. Good luck, whatever method you choose!

I sold 2 cars in last couple yrs to someone in TX and to someone in Southern IL all on Ebay. I also have purchased 2 cars on Ebay(both cars happened to be located in OK). Other cars I have had success using AutoTrader www.autotrader.com . Putting add on these sites greatly opens up the market for you and puts responsibilty of seeing/delivering car to the buyer, not the seller's responsibility. It is so much more economical than local classifieds. If you post on Ebay the more pictures the better and you can list your VIN # so buyer can do a Carfax check. With the low miles on your car (assuming in excellent cond) you should be able to get a good sale. I got over 200 hits on Ebay in the first 24 hours when I sold my Lexus w/100k miles. The Mercedes Roadster with hardtop conv.(w/AMG pkg) was a beauty, 2002 with only 9k miles.

I've sold two and bought two vehicles via Ebay, with no problems.

CL is fine, but there are a lot of flakes and time wasters. I've had a motorcycle on there for a few weeks and have had a couple cretins come to my home to see it.
