Bring your checkbook. Then you don't need to try to guess how much cash to carry with you.

By the way, be prepared for an additional tax bill from the county after your register your vehicle(s). Registering is only for the city: then the county takes a chunk out too!

Not everyone carries a checkbook anymore. I write exactly one check per month (to my HOA) and just do that on-line. Every other bill is simply paid electronically from my checking account. I keep meaning to order a book of paper checks for "just in case" but I rarely think about it as I never really have to write any. I have gotten very used to simply paying for anything and everything with the old Visa card and then just going online and paying the balance at the end of every month. The fact the NC DMVs do not take any form of "plastic" payment is amazing to me.

Plus, if you are new to NC and actually getting your license and tags in the "required" timeframe, people may not have gotten around to getting new checks with their NC address on them yet (it cannot have an address other than the one shown on your driver's license).

He he: the key word there is "required".

We had to get a checking account immediately in order to register our kids for school. So the checkbook came quickly.

But I hear you. Nearly everything I do is online as well. The checkbook is for the one-off situations. Don't think I've written more than 20 checks since I moved.
