Came to know of two such incidents in Providence Pointe sub-division(South Charlotte Area) in the past couple of days. It looks like the thieves targeted working families ( H & W both working) and cleared the house of all valuables and electronics in day-time breakins.
The police has not made any headway/breakthro' in either cases.
Since we also live in a sub close to it, I am wondering how we can work with the local and civic authorities to better prepare to avert such incidents.
Reinforce your door frames where the latches catch (most robbers simply kick in the doors, as they can just swing them shut after they're in and nothing looks amiss at a casual glance - breaking windows doesn't afford that same safety for the bad guys) is a must.
In short, just avoid being the easiest house in the neighborhood to break into and you'll cut your chances of bad things happening by a ton.
Appreciate the response. Is there a way to request additional and frequent drive-by by the police. I am sure that will be a big visual deterrent for the miscreants.
I'm not sure about requesting more patrols, no. It was explained to me, by one of our local cops, that they patrol based on call volume - the more calls a particular neighborhood places, the more that area gets patrolled. He went on to encourage me to call in any time I saw something curious, not just when things appeared really wrong.
Definitely agree w/Hooligan about reinforcing door frames. There have only been a couple of break ins in our neighborhood, but they were all door kick-ins. After one happened on our street we invested in a double paned safety glass storm door. It was only $300 and it cannot be kicked in. We also keep the gate to our backyard locked at all times and our alarm on.
I have to say, out of all the safety things we do, the storm door has brought me the greatest peace of mind. If someone really wants to get in, they will anyway, but these guys are just petty thieves and don't want to mess with a security door (or even a glass storm door, for that matter). You can also buy a door reinforcing kit at Lowes for $99 and it just attaches to the door frame.
