I'm wondering if someone could suggest a campsite for us. I know it will be about 1000 degrees in the middle of summer, so I guess we'd need to go to the mountains where it will get cooler at night or...well, somewhere other than mid Charlotte. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We've lived here for 2 years and have done pretty much nothing in terms of hiking or traveling. We usually stay inside all summer...I know sad. But we are trying to change that this year. Any suggestions? TIA

If you are looking to camp nearby for a weekend get away Kings Mountain State park is good for camping, hiking and Lake Crawford is there for swimming.

Another short get away is Chimney Rock NC about an hour and a half from Charlotte. We enjoy Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground and there is plenty of things to do in Chimney Rock and the Lake Lure areas.

If you want to go further into the mountains we have camped at Maggie Valley and Cherokee. I don't know if you have children or if you will be tent camping or RV. The place we stayed in in Maggie Valley is right in downtown and we could walk to everything. No tent camping just RVs. Rippling Waters doesn't have a website. But you can google it and get reviews and info. We love Maggie Valley.

In Cherokee we stayed at Happy Holiday RV Village. Beautiful mountain views and a clean campground. Cherokee KOA is there too, we have never stayed there but friends have and said it was a nice place too. If you have children there is a Yogi Bear Campground in Cherokee I have heard was a good place.

If you change your mind and want to go to the beach Myrtle Beach State Park is a good place as is Ocean Lakes Family Campground and Lakewood.

Please don't stay inside all summer. We have the mountains one way and the ocean the other way ... you may as well enjoy the ocean before the oil gets here. Happy camping and hiking .... have a good summer.
