My family and I are considereing a move to C'ville. We'd like to be near (not in) the city on a decent size patch of land (40 acres or so). Any suggestions on places to start looking? We'd like a town with a center and a more liberal feel, if possible, but those aren't staunch requirements (just preferances). Thanks!

Whoa! Typo! Not 40 acres--10 acres would do just fine.

Not sure what your definition of near is but in Albemarle/Nelson/Augusta and the surrounding counties there are various plots of land available in differing price ranges. You could be anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes away from C-ville and closer to other towns like Lovingston/Staunton/Waynesboro (There may be places similar;are to the east of C-ville but I am not familiar with that area.)

Thanks, Gregir! I think we want to stay as close to C'ville as possible while still being in a sort of rural area. Any way you could give me a quick rundown of the directly surrounding towns (within, say, a twenty minute commute to C'ville? Character of the towns, affordability, etc. Any information would be much appreciated!

The western end of Louisa County, especially around Zion Crossroads, and the Troy area of Fluvanna would put you within 20 minutes of the Pantops area.

You may want to keep your eye out for smaller parcels in the Green Springs National Historic Landmark District.

Green Springs National Historic Landmark District - Green Springs

This district is in Louisa Co.

Also, if you want a more "liberal feel" you likely need to be in the City of Charlottesville, but you are not likely to find 10 acres there for a home.
