Hey, I was hoping someone had some info about the surrounding counties around charlottesville...my family prefers to live "out in the country" , and we are used to a 20 to 30 minute commute to town. We are a young family relocating because of my husband's job. I need to be on the Lynchburg side of Charlottesville, as my husband my have to drive to that town as well.(I don't think I could live in Lynchburg) Can anybody give me any information on the surrounding counties?...i.e. real estate prices, distance driving, etc? Also, I currently home-school and wonder if there are any non-secular home-school co-ops. How about alternative schools and charter schools? Any in Charlottesville? Thanks in advance for all the help!

You may want to also post this in the general Virginia forum. Charlottesville may be in the geographic northern half of the state but it's not really considered part of "Northern Virginia" by locals. But give us another ten years of sprawl and that might change.

Nelson County should be were you look at. Lovingston the county seat is exactly midway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Highway 29, which connects the two and runs through Nelson County, should make your commute easier, it is similar to an Interstate with speed limits between 60-65.

Nelson County is somewhat cheaper than parts of Albemarle, but you get what you pay for in regards to schools. The county is fairly mountainous and there are a good deal of farmette size rural properties available. With the current market, there are a number of competitivly price rural properties in Albemarle County.

There are a several private schools in Charlottesville-Albemarle and 1 or 2 charter schools. I would imagine with the selection of people in the area there are also several homeschool co-ops.

I am also interested in the homeschooling possibilities in that area... and also interested in carpenters work. Thanks everyone for that advice already, can anyone add anything else about homeschooling?
