Consider it a blessing in disguise and check out some other areas. I moved here a little less than a year ago due to my husband's job and do not care for it. Irrespective of whether you love it, hate it, or just like it; the job market here is dismal. DO NOT move to Charlottesville unless you have procured employment. How in the world this place earned its ranking as the #1 small city in the U.S. confounds me.

Its funny...everyone wants a 200K house next to a thriving fun city, and calls it "expensive" if you can't - but you can go 15-20 minutes in ANY direction and live on acreage for that....that are lots of "Middleburg" esq areas, and you can live amongst them for pretty cheap.

I live 22 minutes from my job in town, on a 1/2 acre lot, and in 2004 paid $246K for a brand new, loaded, 3000 sq ft home....

Now to be fair, we had bought a few homes in NOVA over 34 years.....so I'm jaded :^) Its not bad

JOBS - well I've had no issue as a controller....my wife though, as a Director/VP of Marketing, has ended up in Richmond (50 minutes each way) There are quite a few large employers (GE is still here, and PRA Int is one of the best private companies you can work for, Lexis Nexus, SNL et al)

Just go to google and put in quotes "Marketing jobs in Charlottesville Virginia" (or your job area) and pretty much every site pops up, including the headhunters

Its tight right now - and UVA is hiring very little from the outside - should resume next spring -

I would start with great schools, low crime, diverse groups and politics, art, culture and concerts, average cost of living (middle of the road, not Arkansas, but not NOVA either) decent sized airport, high quality of life, and not far from Richmond, and 2.5 hours to DC.....that would be a start....

This is a city squashed in to a town.....oh and the outdoor activites are fantastic

I'm not saying there aren't some positive things about Charlottesville; however, it is absolutely not the #1 best place in the country to live.
