I think all of the Albemarle County high schools have strong academics. My child was in the Florida public schools prior to Western Albmemarle and has had to catch up quite a bit as the standards are much, much higher...which is a good thing. I have found Western Albemarle to be academically challenging. I would have also sent my child to Albemarle or Monticello; it just worked out to live where we are now. As far as Charlottesville High School, I personally don't know much about it.

I go to Charlottesville High School, and I play girls soccer--welcome [:

The academics at CHS, as we call it, are incredibly rigorous. We offer more Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment (that is, being concurrently enrolled at the local community college) courses than any other high school in the area. The academic team has won four consectutive state titles, from 2004-2008, and our debate and forensics teams feature over 15 members ranked nationally.

As far as diversity, CHS is BY FAR the most diverse school in the region. We have over 45 students in our english-as-a-second-language programs, and have an entire Diversity Week in April, celebrating our legendary diversity. I'm incredibly close with students who attend William Monroe in Greene Country, Fluvanna High in Fluvanna, and Albermarle, Monticello, and Western Albermarle High Schools in Albermarle County, and all of these students are disappointed with their school's respective diversity. Western Albermarle may be economically diverse, but racially, it's almost 98% white.

Charlottesville, like most larger university towns surrounded by predominantly farm land, is decidedly politically liberal. However, there are definitely mostly working class people in the town, with wealthier residents living on the outskirts of town or in the Park Street neighborhood. Charlottesville however also has public housing, but there's really not much trouble heard from that neighborhood.

Our band program is in the Virginia Honor Band Hall of Fame, earning 29 consecutive "Superior" ratings, and Loren Maazel of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra recently invited CHS' String Ensemble to his estate at Castleton for a week--the only high school orchestra in the country to be invited. Our choir has participated in festivals and showcases across the country, and our theatre department is renowned throughout the state as one of excellence and consistency, winning numerous awards at States and Regionals every year.

As for soccer, our teams are fantastic. It is a sport taken incredibly seriously, but you don't have to play club soccer, fall soccer, or participate in the Olympic Development Program to play--though many players do. Both the girls' and boys' teams are filled with wonderful, kind players and coaches, a hard thing to find in high school sports [: Our boys' team last won a state championship in 2004, while our girls' team played in the state final in 2005. Emily Perrin, a graduate of CHS, holds the VHSL (Virginia Highschool Sports League) state scoring record.

Some other alluring things about Charlottesville:
--We have an entirely pedestrian downtown mall. Located in the heart of Charlottesville, it's the place to be in the summer for "Fridays after Five", featuring local bands, music, and outdoor eating.
--The local schools partner consistently with UVa to sponsor field trips, summer programs, and contests.

Long and short--CHS would be more than happy to welcome your daughter, if and when you decide to make your move.

Just thought I would throw my two cents in. Our son is at Charlottesville High School and we could not be happier. From an acadamic standpoint one cannot find a better school. I know in my son's grade there are a significant number of students that had been going to private school (Peabody, Tandem and Village School), that live outside the city limits, and pay tuition to attend CHS. Good luck on your decision.
