Default Traffic?!?

Only in pouring rain and "rush-hour" traffic would it take you 30-35 minutes to get from downtown Chattanooga to the base of Flat Top Mountain in Soddy Daisy. That's a 20-minute drive, at most - it's all highway at a steady 75 MPH. There is no traffic on the west side of Chattanooga (27 corridor) between Red Bank and Soddy Daisy, at any time of day. I'm comparing Chattanooga with other areas such as Washington, D.C., Denver, Houston, and Atlanta. There is no comparison. It's the difference between 200,000 people trying to get around town at the same time each day vs. 2 to 4 million people. All bets are off if you're on the East side of the river where you have to contend with bad accidents that occur daily on I-75 and/or I-24.

ITC - I would tend to agree with you based on my limited experience driving around town. The area around Hamilton Place was a small reminder of what we're trying to get away from. That's why we looked to be on the west side of town.

you'll have far less traffic if you stay on the north side of the river.

Soddy Daisy, Signal Mtn areas are the best IMHO

not much rush hour traffic in Chattanooga, most of the gridlock comes from the many road projects in the area. I can't tell you how many times I've been over there sitting on the interstate barely moving because of all but one lane being shut down. Or the many detours in the downtown area for the same reason.

What they have in Chattanooga is not "traffic".. it's "some cars on the road". LOL Of course, I live 1.5 hours south in the Atlanta metro, so compared to HERE, even bad days in Chattanooga are GOOD.

Then again, that's something to consider... that Chattanooga is only 1.5 hours north of Atlanta, with a metro population here of 5 million. I-75 is a major road connecting north to south, and I even know a couple of people who work in Atlanta who actually LIVE just south of Chattanooga who do the commute every day. The sheer amount of growth we have here in the region has spawned the joke that in 15 years Chattanooga will just be a northern suburb of Atlanta (and it's a nervous joke up there I bet). So if you move south of Chattanooga, keep in mind that at some times, the northbound traffic (much from Atlanta going north), can make I-75 / 24 area seem a bit crazy.
