I ordered a new Cadillac escalade ESV for my wife to drive around our 3 kids. When I placed the order about a month ago, talk of GM going BK wasn't really prevalent. Now with it seeming almost unavoidable on June 1, I am wondering if buying a GM vehicle might prove problematic down the road. I'd like to do my part to keep them afloat, but I don't want to have any problems arise when service and/or parts are needed in the future. Say a new fuel pump was needed and parts aren't readily available anymore. I can't have my wife without a vehicle for an extended period of time due to part scarcity.

Anybody else have thoughts on this?

British Leyland put four paws into the air many years ago, but parts are probably more available for classic MG cars now than they were in the 60's and 70's.

Wear parts like fuel pumps are generally made by subs, but in any case there are a lot of GM cars out there, even if the factories were wiped from the face of the earth, the aftermarket would support them for a long time.

I don't know about warrenty service though. Someone who does should post up.

From what I've read one of the potential conditions of the BK would be that they have to still honor existing warranties and support previous models like they always have.

BK doesn't mean they are disappearing. They're just going to hit the reset button on their financial situation, reorganize, and then come back doing business as usual...sort of.

With Caddy being announced as one of the 'core' brands that means they are even more likely to continue on. I wouldn't be affraid of buying one...but I'd gig the dealer to see if they'd cut the price a bit due to my 'uncertainty'.

The government is backing warranties for GM and Chrysler for the time being.

You're just buying a rebadged Chevy. You will still get parts.

You have nothing to worry about until Chapter 7 (still a very real possibility) gets bandied about.

A friend of mine just took delivery of a new Dodge Challenger, loaded to the hilt with the 425 hp engine. The fact that Chrysler was in bankruptcy didn't phase his decision one bit. He wanted the car and that was all that mattered. In fact, if Chrysler never recovered from BK, the car would probably be a collector item.

As others have said, you won't have to worry about the warranty or parts availability.

I'm curious why you chose to order an Escalade, though. There aren't that many ways to configure one and they're readily available on most dealer lots.

Wife wanted the dark blue color. Not one available in entire US in that color fully loaded.

I wouldn't worry about it. They'll have to honor the warranty, and other companies would see $$$ in selling aftermarket parts and would produce them

Cadillac is one of GM's strongest brands, so seeing it get cut off their list is very unlikely. And as others have said, the warranty is backed by the U.S. government.
