Hi, all. I have been reading these forums since we decided two weeks ago to relocate from Rochester, N.Y. to the Chicago area. My husband has accepted a position that will have him working between offices in Schiller Park and Woodridge. I have a two children, one going into seventh grade and one going into fourth. I will be home for a few months to get them settled in so work commute won't be a factor for me.

We are planning two trips in the next month to drive around and get a sense of commutes and areas. But I am hoping those of you who know the area can give me an idea of where might be a convenient place to live. Wheaton seems like a good locale because it's sort of between the two, but without knowing the traffic patterns, perhaps it's hard to know. We are coming from a town of about 55,000 outside of Rochester. Great schools, lots of walking trails and a tight-knit community feel. Would love to find all of that again. Budget is about 350-400K.

I welcome any and all comments.
Thanks!

Downers Grove ?, Lisle?, Naperville (it's worth the extra drive), Oak Brook, ELMHURST (very nice), .. Wheaton is out of the way and VERY conservative. It is known for having "more churches per capita than any other town in America." (Not that that's bad, it's just conservative and will attract conservative people).

Why not just live in Woodridge? The schools are great, there are wonderful bike paths, access to the forest preserves and a strong park district program.

You can get a lot of house in Woodridge for $350k and still have the convenience of strong transportation (quick access to 355, and I-55) which will allow you to get to Schiller Park quickly. Wheaton and Naperville are pricey and have a much larger feel/disconnected than Woodridge, Downers or Lisle.

I second looking into Woodridge. Lived here for 8 years and couldn't be happier. Plus in your price range you'll get a real nice house/neighborhood.

Thanks so much to all of you! I really appreciate the help. I hadn't seen or heard anything really about Woodridge. I am intrigued and glad to hear the schools are good. Is there a particular neighborhood to look into?

Thanks!

An inexpesive alternative is Schiller Park, I moved away for work years ago but have a lot of family there, they love it and it has a very old school neighborhood vibe. My parents sent all 8 of us to the local junior college before we went on to four year schools

Problem with Schiller Park is its proximity to O'Hare and the noise associated with it. Might be a tad out of the way, but Glen Ellyn is very appealing.

Thanks, murray and CubSox. My husband had to drive to Geneva for work and fell in love with it. From what I can learn from afar, I can see the appeal. I think it's a lot like our town in western NY. But I am trying to get him to really consider how he'll feel about that commute day after day. He said it was about an hour each way. Would that be the norm from O'Hare to Geneva? Train isn't an option since he has to be able to get to accounts regularly.

Thanks!

OK, if he liked Geneva, look at Glen Ellyn.
