It sounds like Evanston completely fits the bill, and it is a really cute town/small city. It has an urban feel, a lot of restaurants and shopping, but it still isn't quite as congested as the city. For the price range you have, I'm sure you can find something really nice.

Honestly, looking around on Craigslist, there are even single family homes available for rent at that price, as well as condos and townhomes, all of which are usually better kept than large apartment complexes.

Here's a 2br bungalow for $1790/month, but I think it's a little further from downtown Evanston.

I would def. suggest browsing craigslist if you haven't already.

I would personally avoid moving into Chicago itself, considering that you will be working in Northbrook. I commuted from the suburbs into downtown Chicago for several years for college, and it was enough to drive a crazy person sane.

Other than that, if you do decide on an apartment complex, make sure you research the management company and the building before making any final decisions. The sites below are really helpful.

Apartment Ratings :: The leading source of apartment reviews by renters for renters.

San Francisco Restaurants, Dentists, Bars, Beauty Salons, Doctors

If all else fails, punch the address of the building and the name of the property management company into Google, and see if there are any reviews or complaints.

Hope all goes well. Chicago is gorgeous in the summer time, especially the lake front and nice beaches.

PS: 94 is way better than 90, but it can still turn into a parking lot during rush hour. I agree with reppin_the_847 about taking the back roads. Make sure you bring a GPS, and just play with different routes until you find one that works. There are a lot of pretty back roads in IL if you take the time to find them.

The "San Francisco Restaurants, Dentists, Bars...." link, is actually a link to "Yelp.com".

I dunno why it showed up like that instead.
