I will be visiting family in Algonquin and will be making several trips into downtown Chicago (via car) to check out the attractions (Willis Tower, Shedd, Field Museum, Navy Pier). Does anybody have advice as to where I can park, how much it will cost, and what I can expect?

I was thinking of driving my car to Ohare, leaving it at the park and ride, and hoping on a train into the city. Would that be possible? If so how much can I expect to pay, how long would the commute be? and would it be safe for the wife and three kids? Or would I be better of driving into Downtown?

Any detailed help and informaton would be greatly appeciated.

Any better suggestions?

Thank You

Use Metra. Drive to O'Hare is TOO FAR from where your family is!

Barrington is station on the UP-NW line with good service options and shortest drive to most parts of Algonquin.

I think the Chicago CityPass is a good idea for tourists who will be visiting the city for several days. The Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Willis Tower are included in the pass, as well as admission to two other museums (like the Planetarium and the Museum of Science & Industry). The overall cost is much less than if you buy the tickets separately.

Chicago CityPASS® | Visit 5 Chicago attractions for just $76.00 per pass, a $150.62 value!

I'm sorry, but I don't know about train commutes from O'Hare to downtown Chicago. Parking is expensive, it's true.

Also, if you are members of any museums where you live, check whether you can get "reciprocal" admission when you travel. We are currently members of the Museum of Science & Industry, and we can get into many science museums throughout the U.S. for free (likewise, members of those museums can get into MSI for free when they visit). A lot of museums do this.

Do not drive during the weekday. The traffic is terrible and it will take about 2 hours plus parking will be $25 minimum. Take the train from Crystal Lake, Cary, or Fox River Grove, whichever is closest.

And on weekends the Metra fare is $7.00 roundtrip per adult, with children under 12 riding free.

You will definitely not want to drive from Algonquin to O'Hare to park. Way too far. Take the Metra.
