If you work in schaumburg just live their, i mean you have everything you want in schaumburg every store, restaurant, ect. and you have transit that takes you downtown when you need to plus their is just too much traffic in the chi to be going back in fourth.

I don't really like the Schaumbaurg area and it's away from my friends who live in/around the Skokie area. That's why I was kind of looking for a halfway point.

Park Ridge might be a little out of the range. Des Plaines is possible. I wish the commute to West Rogers park would be doable on the way home but it would take forever.

What I find appealing about Des Plaines is that if you rent close to downtown, you have restaurants, bars, library, groceries, Metra, and Forest Preserve/Des Plaines River Trail within easy walking distance. The drive to Schaumburg should be 20-ish minutes and Skokie is about a similar distance. You are also close to Rosemont where you can catch the Blue Line and also find a bunch of entertainment options.

I'm not too familiar with the downtown area of Des Plaines. What intersections cover the downtown area?

Well then if the OP stated they did NOT want to live in Schaumburg, why did you recommend living there-especially since they work there and are not new to the area?

Ex and son live in schaumburg. It's all about the mall. I'm in my 40s looking for a home town feel. I love oak park and evanston but too but it to far from Schaum. What to do??

Depending on what you desire for a "hometown feel", Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Park Ridge and even Palatine(to an extent) have nice downtowns(for suburbs). While not as lively as Evanston or Oak Park, they still provide a large amount of entertainment and amenities you can walk to.

Skokie itself seems like one of the better options. There's nightlife in Evanston, and the commute to North Side nightlife areas is manageable.

You could live in Evanston itself. But it's somewhat farther from Schaumburg and more expensive. $900 for a 1BR is doable, although not in the most upscale areas.

Arlington Heights is near Schaumburg and has a downtown and some nightlife.

In any of these areas, you'd have to drive to nightlife. Obviously, you'd have to stay sober enough to drive home. Neither the Yellow Line nor the Purple Line runs all night.
