Stay away!! Carpentersville was bad when I lived there, so I can't imgine how bad it has become. Trust me, there are far better places.

carpentersville IS bad, but living in silverstone community you are isolated from the rest of c-ville. you end up doing most your shopping & dining in algonquin and really don't need to bother with c-ville at all. i lived in silverstone a year with no problems whatsoever.

After reading all of these posts, I thought back to my trip to Carpentersville.

I was taking the Tollroad into Chicago when the traffic backed up due to the open tolling construction. I exited the highway at Elgin and took the backroads through Sleepy Hollow, past the mall, across the river and then found myself in Carpentersville. I had heard that this was one of the affordable areas, and at the time I was looking for apartments, so I stopped by a few complexes (most were ridiculously overpriced for the area btw) and just got a feel for the community based on what I saw.

The first impression to me was the horrible shape of the roads, they were all so old. Then, in the eastern half, I would say that there doesn't seem to be much new development either.

Now, was it bad? No. Was it run down? Nope. Just not brand new, it definantly had a 'dated' feel. It was a taken care of place, but a modest community nonetheless.

The Hispanic issue that people bring up here is a shock to me, I guess it just seemed like it stuck out for NOT being the lilly white suburb, but it certainly isn't a war zone or illegal immigration magnet. It is obviosuly a community that is affordable and centrally located to many construction and low skilled jobs which would probably explain why it has a higher Hispanic population. This trend of skyrocketing Hispanic populations is happening all over the country, not just here.

In the end, I ruled off Carpentersville from my possible to move list, because I couldn't find a dog friendly apartment there. Also, it IS rather far from Chicago...but the whole Hispanic element was never even a factor, and I am from Wisconsin originally, so that says a lot (not a traditionally diverse area).

Moral of the story is, if you don't mind diversity, C-ville is a run of the mill place, nothing great about it, nothing overly bad. You could do better in neighboring suburbs, but to paint this community as something much worse than it is...is inaccurate.

If you are looking to buy a place and make money, NO, dont go to C'ville. If you have kids who will use the school system, NO WAY. If you are looking for a long time investment and safe place to call home, go elsewhere.

well we have been here a week now, still havent seen anything that looked all that bad, but then again we have done most of are shopping in Algonquin. Randell road seems to have everything i would ever need. We dont really go in to C-Ville unless we are driving through it. I see there is ALot of new development in the area. I think it will work for us. I'm not to worried at this point.

Nothing personal, but you mentioned that you took a trip there. That doesn't count for much.

Your'e right...it was a drive through and I was looking for a place to live...and I didn't have any preconceived notions about the place, I just took it for what it was and compared it to the adjacent areas. I just was sharing my impressions as a Wisconsinte looking to move to the area...and it just didn't live up to the negative hype I have read on this thread.

Just a diverse, working class, older suburb. I don't know anything detailed...but you can get a feel for a place when you are searching for an apartment...

Diverse? Illegal immigrants have absolutly taken over the town and school system and the town has suffered greatly and has changed from its reputation as a family centered/safe/affordable/blue collar town it was years ago. Gangs have definitly been a problam.
