I have what seems to be a pretty typical question on here. We are considering moving out of the city and to the suburbs primarily because we would like better schools for our kids who will be school age in a couple of years.

The twist for me is political leanings. Do either New Trier or Hisndale tend to be more left leaning or are the politics of the 2 areas similar enough that this isn't really an issue to consider?

Thanks.

Default Hard pressed to find a real politcal differences...

On social issues both areas are just about exactly the same -- very much accomodative of "left leaning" positions.

On fiscal issues both areas are also remarkably similar -- generally supportive of "free market ideals".

The range of folks in either area quite diverse in terms things like ethnic background, support of politcal parties, even 'alternative lifestyles'.

It really comes down to finding the right mix of housing /commute to work in either area. Hinsdale Central has just a few feeder school districts. In addition to the homes in Hinsdale which are part of the district these feeder schools also serve parts of towns like Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge and Westmont. New Trier has a slightly longer of list feeder school districts but many have just one or two schools.

According to city-data 49% of Hinsdale voted republican vs 25% of Wilmette voting republican. It seems that the political differences are quite definitive.

Wilmette is 84% white and Hinsdale is 83.3% white, so I suppose calling either one ethnically diverse is somewhat subjective depending on your definition of "diversity".

Uniformly rich towns are generally more conservative. Wilmette is probably proportionately less so than Hinsdale due to it's proximity to the more diverse and liberal leaning Evanston and Northwestern University.

New Trier serves far more communities than just Wilmette.

I agree that Hinsdale is generally more costly than Wilmette but when you include Winnetka, Glencoe, Kennilworth and the other towns that are served by New Trier things balance out almost exactly vs towns like Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge and Westmont portions of which are served by Hinsdale Central.

Similarly any political differences rapidly fade when one include the entire set of towns that is part of either school.

There is no way Hinsdale is more costly than Wilmette. Per square foot of house and land Wilmette has got to be top 1 or 2 in chicagoland.

I think the City-Data voting stats are broken down at the county level, so you are really looking at Cook County verses DuPage County with those stats. And New Trier is not even in Wilmette. It's in Northfield and Winnetka. It serves five suburbs (Winnetka, Northfield, Wilmette, Kennilworth, and Glencoe)

Ok, then if we include all those northern suburbs stated, both will have a more conservative lean, and both are still predominantly white, hence the lack of ethnic diversity. If that's what one is looking for than its fine, but to call either one ethnically diverse is a far cry from reality.

Having not seen a lot of these houses in person, it seems to me like the houses in Hinsdale are nicer in general than the houses in Wilmette. For example

Wilmette: 335 Central Ave, WILMETTE, IL 60091 | MLS# 08524669 | Redfin

Hinsdale: 805 N Elm St, HINSDALE, IL 60521 | MLS# 08548586 | Redfin

At pretty much the same price point, the house in Hinsdale looks both nicer and newer. Maybe its just my personal preference but it seems like you get more for your money in Hinsdale.

Yeah - I looked at houses in both towns and in Wilmette the houses were over 100 years old with tiny rooms. Just seemed like you could get more for the money in Hinsdale.

I dont think median list price and sale price is really a good indicator. Take Glenview and Barrington. The median price in glenview is much lower than barrington because in barrington the houses on average are much larger and have alot of land. Per square foot Glenview is much more expensive. I dont know what redfin will show but that is based on experience looking at houses.
