I noticed a few weeks ago that Google Maps has painted the towns of Villa Park, Lombard, Addison, Glendale Heights and Glen Ellyn (forming a square) a darker shade of grey.

Any chance that anyone knows why? Future FEMA campsite?

If you search the google discussion groups (either the ones they host or those that try to crack the google SEO algorithms...) you will see that this sort of thing is not all that uncommon. The data feeds that they use to build the maps increasingly come from their camera / sensor equiped cars but when they overly that against the data from sources like the US Census they often end up with "shading anomolies" that they eventually get around to "fixing" probably through some highly back logged manual process...

It appears to be a sizeable area, from Butterfield Rd (or maybe Roosevelt Rd) to Army Trail Rd n-s and then Schmale Rd to Rt 83 e-w, lots of old style county addresses in that region to cause they ol' google brain to have some conniptions ...

Waze is feeding data into the traffic algorithms and that is making thems more useful for time estimate of commuting.

SkyNet will soon acheive conciousness and start using plasma rifles to drive us underground.

(kidding about the last part... )

I also noticed this and have been wondering about it. I figure it's because I spend most of my time within that gray square, and, well... I'm kind of a big deal.
