Why are these suburban areas showing up in a darker gray than others when you look on Google maps?

Because I live there.

Someone recently posted this same question, and I think the answer was that Google is working to address these types of anomalies. So in other words, who knows?

Oh my gosh.. I have been wondering the same thing! My husband and I were stumped trying to figure it out.. we live in Lombard and whenever I look up weather I see the darker gray area. So strange...

I notice that, as of today, the darker gray area is gone.

No seriously, dont you think it is prettier to see various shades of colors on the map, otherwise everything would look the same, i think it makes it easier to see the map, whether they did it on purpose, or accidentally on purpose.
