Good evening, all. I currently live in Beverly in Chicago. I love the area!!! However, I am considering moving to Flossmoor to get more house and land for my money. How does Flossmoor compare to Beverly? Education for my children is also important (the selective enrollment process for Chicago is truly a challenge). I am looking for opinions for those that have experience with both areas to give me their pro's and con's with such a move.

Thanks in advance.

At least in Beverly you get to vote in city elections. Some say you can do so from Flossmoor, but I don't think that is true any longer.

I know Beverly pretty well, flossmoor not so much though I am somewhat familiar with the south suburbs.

I think its apples and oranges you cant really compare. The whole sense of neighborhood and community in beverly will not be present in flossmoor.

I really like how there''s kind of a neighborhood pride in beverly. Lots of people know lots of other people. I dont know how to really put into words that whole aspect I like about beverly but if you like that as well you wont have it in flosmoor.

I was making this decision not too long ago. Every situation is different, but for me it came down to three issues: 1) property taxes were much higher in Flossmoor AND I had already decided to use private schools in the city, 2) I go into the heart of the city several times a week (for shopping, entertainment) and flossmoor was a bit too far and 3) in Beverly I felt that there was a much stronger sense of community in the parks, rec centers, restaurants, cafes, etc. Flossmoor felt more suburban -- like you have your huge piece of property and are somewhat isolated from other people. Latter point was just a vibe after hanging out for a few days as an outsider, nothing scientific.

On the plus side, the homes and lots were spectacular in Flossmoor. tough call but I'm happy with my decision.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. I keep going back and forth. I desire more space, but truly enjoy the community here in Beverly. I guess I should hang out in Flossmoor for a while to truly get a feel of what living in that area would be like. It's hard to get an actual comparison if you have only truly experienced one.

deechee,

Why do you think Flossmoor is a better option. Living in Beverly, I am very familiar with my current location, but I'd like you to expound more on why Flossmoor was a better choice for you?

4. Good schools
5. Nice homes
6. Nature, nature, nature
7. More privacy

Honestly though, Beverly for the city, has lots of nature. I've seen the neighborhood surrounded by Dan Ryan Woods to the south and I was very impressed by how secluded it felt. East Beverly not so much. But along the Longwood corridor area, its pretty spectacular.

I would say both areas are grea options, because they are basically islands of relative affluence, nice homes, in the far south part of Chicagoland that has seen better days. Both communities are surrounded by areas that are in bad shape.

What this results in: is that you have homes that look like they could be in the north shore, but much more affordable and diverse.
