All the suburbs in the area are family friendly. All the nightlife ones, are too far from Elgin.
You said one hour commute to Elgin is fine, then maybe PR, or Evanston, but the commute is long.
Sorry, best I got.

Arlington Heights, without a doubt. Stay away from Schaumburg. Here's a guide to restaurants, bars, and businesses in downtown Arlington Heights:

DOWNTOWN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS GUIDE

There's certainly enough to keep busy with. And the rentals around the downtown district draw a number of young professionals who work along the Golden Corridor and don't want to deal with the long commute and high rental prices of 606** living. The downtown Arlington Heights Metra connection makes weekend travel to Chicago a breeze.

A one hour commute to Elgin will be 2 hours if there's a huge snowstorm. Chicago weather and traffic is a nightmare, especially in the winter. I would never move to Park Ridge or Evanston if I was working in Elgin. Ugh, driving from there, to Elgin, is hard enough. I've done it enough times to know, and the tollway can be a nightmare during rush hour traffic. Side streets are no better.

Schaumburg is very close and central to everything. Yes, it's not hip and happening, but there's certainly a lot of restaurants/shopping and it's easy to get to Elgin from there, even with side streets.

And about 20 minutes from Schaumburg station to Elgin (downtown) station on Milwaukee West train.

I think the Tri-Cities, Batavia included, are the best bet.

Thank you all for the great advise....When I went to Elgin for my interview two weeks ago, I visited schaumburg and saw a few places and I was impressed by the easy commute but I could see myself getting bored too quickly.

I came across Arlington Heights recently while doing some research and I will definitely take a look at few condos while I am there for condo searches. I will also consider the tri-cities as well.

I am very familiar with bad road conditions and extra commuting time due to snow, being from Toronto has prepared me for it.

Once again thanks all and if you guys have any other advice regarding my move it will be greatly appreciated it.

The point I was trying to make. It's the family friendly part of IL, along with NS, Far North, West, South- well anywhere except near the city.
