Does anyone know details on Oak Park parking?

To me it seems you can't park on the streets during the day and I notice there's parking lots that you have to pay for? Who has lived there? Is it a pain? I live in Chicago (Logan Square) and work in the west suburbs but want to move closer. Oak Park seems nice in that it seems Chicago-like but it seems like it even worse for parking. Anyone have experience?

If you're referring to downtown OP, I don't really have any suggestions other than a lot of people grumble about parking and it's going to get worse with the influx of new residents.

In the neighborhoods of OP, there is *no* night parking on the streets, but it's not too big of a deal because every house has a garage. However, while I'm a bit away from DT, day parking is allowed on my street with no restrictions

A lot of apartment buildings also reserve a space for each unit in surface lots.

Sorry, this is really all I can offer.

Parking is restricted/metered in the downtown area and near transit stations. Away from those areas daytime parking is not really difficult at all. Overnight on-street parking is prohibited with only a few exceptions (limited areas have overnight parking permits).

Yes, it can be a big pain unless you own a house with a garage. If you go on the Oak Park village web site it will point you to a lot of info on parking restrictions based on your housing situation and the block you plan to live on. I believe there's even a devoted phone line for parking info which potential residents should definitely make use of. I wouldn't commit to an apartment/condo in Oak Park until you really understand the parking system and know where you are going to park overnight.

Oh, and the village makes a TON of money from tickets. Park "illegally" for more than 5 minutes or let the meter run out downtown and expect a $25-30 ticket.

Oak Park has a lot of positives (which is part of the reason why there is so much competition for parking). So don't rule it out. Just keep in mind that its nickname is "No Park".

Good luck!

And another bit of advice about apartments/condos in Oak Park. The newer buildings usually have their own parking lots so parking overnight wouldn't be a problem. But the vintage 1920's buildings that so many people favor for their architecture were built before automobiles were common. So usually there's no off-street parking on site and you have to deal with parking permits for overnight street parking (some buildings) or village lots. It all varies, so check with the village or a local realtor.

And check where the lot is if they offer one. A friend of mine lived in Oak Park and had to park her car several blocks from her building cause that was the lot she could get for overnight parking.
