Hi all. I am looking to buy my first home. I am a single professional in my 30's. I currently live on the NW side of Chicago and work in Mundelein. My commute is not terrible, but I am looking for something a little closer about 30 min or less. Most of my friends and family live in the city, so I am really torn whether or not to live in lake or cook county. I don't want to be so far out that nobody will want to visit me. My budget is 300k-400k ideally in the middle somewhere. My must haves are central ac, garage, big backyard, and big basement. I am brand new to this process so I was hoping for a little advice on good areas for someone like me to live taking into account resale value, entertainment, school districts (no kids but will affect resale), ease of commute, etc..
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you plan on continuing to work in Mundelein, it makes less sense to move somewhere where you won't have many of your boxes checked off. That will mean moving a bit further out of where you are currently located. If good schools are in the mix, you might want to look at Buffalo Grove in Lake County, or Mt Prospect/Arlington Heights in Cook. Commute times may be off a little.

Fix up this little starter home:

I'm stuck working in mundelein for awhile. My Prospect would be ideal but someone told me the area is getting worse quickly, not sure if this is true. As far as BG and AH, the property taxes seem outrageous, from what I've seen they are 10k or more?

You cant have your cake and eat it too

Seriously though- you wont be able to check all your boxes. The SFHs in thr better suburban school districts in your target area are not cheap. If you cannot compromise on property taxes, your commute will be longer or you will have a more modest SFH or condo.
